Yum Yum

Today was a big day for Lily! She tried solids for the very first time!

Lily had been showing all the signs of being ready over the past week. She seemed genuinely interested in food. She began to watch me eat, and reach for my cup and utensils while I was eating. She has been gaining weight steadily, and is able to sit in her highchair. I had originally planned to start her after her 4 month check-up on Thursday, after I got the go ahead from the pediatrician, but my instinct told me she was ready.

I had planned on starting her on avocado, but I decided on rice cereal instead. Once she was strapped in, it was go time!

She immediately slurped it off the spoon and swallowed. She was off to a great start! And then the taste hit her.

I tried another spoonful. Once again, she ate and swallowed, and then reacted to the taste!

Only one word can describe her reaction to solids. Horrified.

I don't blame her. I tried what I was feeding her. And, frankly? It sucked.

At this point, it's all about teaching her how to eat solids. She will still be exclusively breastfed, but I'm going to start making her baby food, and offering a few spoonfuls once a day. She is eating off the spoon well, and not gagging, so I think we may try something with more taste!

I hope she reacts better the next time. Because??? I've never seen a baby so relieved to get her face wiped off!

  2. hahahhaha! Love these pictures!

Yeah, my Lily didn't care for rice cereal either. It's terrible!

The experience made for a great photo shoot though! :)

p.s. we have the same highchair.

  4. oooh my...she is a smarty girl, not only does rice cereal look gross, the taste is horrible too. We totally skipped the rice cereal and moved on to baby oatmeal mixed with fruit. You know it is bad when a baby WANTS their face wiped! Good Luck!

  6. Totally cracking up - those expressions are priceless!

If only my kiddo was the same... my mother ruined him by giving him a finger covered with Cherry Garcia when he was 3 months old! ACK!

  7. Hahaha! The collection of pictures was great! I had one daughter who ate too much rice cereal the first time I fed her, then became ill. She NEVER ate baby food again...wouldn't even eat ice cream.

  9. Aww!

I have video of Buster's first time eating and it was priceless. He was totally gung-ho (and has been ever since).

Try the oatmeal since she does so well with swallowing. My boys always liked that better.

  10. Those shots are hilarious, but I don't blame her the taste is bad! I actually made my husband taste it. We pretty much went right to the oatmeal w/ banana and it was a hit! :)

  18. Can you blame her? Rice cereal looks nasty and is so runny. I never had luck with it. Oatmeal was okay, but I'd just go straight to some yummy sweet potatoes. :)

  22. OOOOOHHH MYYY GOSH the pictures are JUST THE BEST! Seriously, I smiled and laughed out loud the whole time. She kind of looks like you might have been poisoning her :) We skipped the Rice cereal and oatmeal and went straight to the squash and he thought it was ok. Peas are a total hit though :)

  23. A did ok with the rice cereal - I went for the multi grain instead of the white. But she barely gives me a chance to pump (I have to do it when I'm pretty full) so we didn't go with it for very long. She loves oatmeal and fruit the best! Precious pictures!! Of all the video I have of my son, his first experience with rice cereal sticks out and is hilarious! She actually ate it much better lol.

  25. My girl's both hated that rice stuff lol! Matt was all about the blender and making Alaina baby food lol! Bella on the other hand, had a lot of her teeth early, so she didn't eat much baby food. Keep up the good work with making your own!

  26. That's great. I am still breastfeeding my son full time (he is one) and he is such a picky eater. He loves pasta ooohhh, and cookies ;) who doesn't, but doesn't like cerel or any beginner food that they are suppose to eat. *sigh* You seem to be off to a great start!!

PS I love your new banner and the snowflakes that fall on your page.
